Milkweed Butterflies of Zihuatanejo

GENUS DANAUS

The genus Danaus is a group of medium- to large-sized butterflies within the family Nymphalidae. Commonly known as the milkweed butterflies, species of Danaus are distributed throughout tropical and temperate regions of the world. These butterflies are renowned for their striking coloration, typically featuring combinations of orange, black, white, brown, or bluish markings that serve as warning signals to predators. Their caterpillars feed primarily on milkweeds and related plants, from which they sequester toxic compounds that make both the larvae and adults distasteful or poisonous to many predators.
