Shorebirds and Allies (Order Charadriiformes)

Order Charadriiformes is a large and diverse group of birds that includes shorebirds, gulls, terns, skimmers, auks, puffins, plovers, sandpipers, oystercatchers, and many related species. Members of this order are found on every continent and occupy a wide range of habitats, including beaches, mudflats, wetlands, rivers, lakes, grasslands, tundra, and open oceans. Although highly varied in appearance and lifestyle, most Charadriiformes are adapted for feeding along shorelines or in aquatic environments, consuming insects, crustaceans, mollusks, fish, and other small animals. Many species are renowned for their long-distance migrations, with some traveling thousands of kilometers between breeding and wintering grounds each year.
