Tree Frogs of Zihuatanejo

LEAF FROGS

Genus Agalychnis is a genus of arboreal tree frogs belonging to the family Hylidae, native to the tropical forests of Central and northern South America. These frogs are renowned for their striking coloration, often featuring bright green bodies combined with vividly colored eyes, flanks, feet, or webbing. The best-known species is the Agalychnis callidryas, famous for its brilliant red eyes and colorful blue-and-yellow side markings. Members of Agalychnis are primarily nocturnal and spend most of their lives in trees and shrubs near ponds, streams, and other breeding sites. They possess large adhesive toe pads that enable them to climb efficiently on vegetation.

The Mexican Giant Tree Frog is the the only species of Leaf Frog (family Phyllomedusidae) documented in the Zihuatanejo area.
