Genus Polygonus is a genus of medium- to large-sized skipper butterflies in the family Hesperiidae, distributed from the southern United States and Mexico through Central America, the Caribbean, and much of South America. These butterflies are robust and fast-flying, typically dark brown to black with bands or spots of pale yellow, cream, or orange. Several species possess short hindwing tails and a streamlined appearance that gives them a resemblance to some of the longtail skippers. Polygonus species inhabit tropical dry forests, woodland edges, scrublands, agricultural areas, and forest clearings, where adults visit flowers for nectar and often patrol sunny openings.
