​The subfamily Polyommatinae is  commonly known as the blues.  Most species are small butterflies characterized by delicate bodies and brilliant iridescent blue coloration on the upper wing surfaces of males, while females are often brown, grey, or less brightly coloured. The undersides of the wings typically display intricate patterns of spots, bands, and eye-like markings that provide camouflage when the butterflies are at rest. Polyommatine butterflies inhabit a wide variety of habitats, including grasslands, meadows, forests, shrublands, alpine regions, and deserts.
