Family Papilionidae, commonly known as the swallowtails and birdwing butterflies, is a family of large and often spectacular butterflies within the superfamily Papilionoidea. Comprising more than 600 species worldwide, members of this family are renowned for their striking coloration, graceful flight, and, in many species, the presence of tail-like extensions on the hind wings that resemble the forked tail of a swallow. Papilionids occur on every continent except Antarctica and inhabit a wide variety of environments, including tropical rainforests, temperate woodlands, grasslands, and mountain regions.
