Antennariidae (Family)
Antennariidae are a family of highly specialized marine anglerfishes commonly known as frogfishes. Found primarily in tropical and subtropical oceans worldwide, they inhabit coral reefs, rocky bottoms, and sandy or rubble-covered seafloors, where their camouflage is most effective. Frogfishes are compact, globose fishes with large mouths, short bodies, and limb-like pectoral and pelvic fins that they use to “walk” along the substrate rather than swim extensively. Their skin is often covered in warty bumps, filaments, or fleshy projections that help them resemble sponges, algae, or rocks. They are ambush predators, feeding mainly on small fishes and crustaceans. Frogfishes are generally solitary and rely on stealth rather than speed for survival.
