Order Coleoptera comprises the beetles, the largest order of insects and the most species-rich order of animals on Earth, with more than 400,000 described species and potentially hundreds of thousands more awaiting discovery. Beetles occur in virtually every terrestrial and freshwater habitat, from tropical rainforests and deserts to wetlands, mountains, caves, and even the Arctic. They are distinguished by their hardened forewings, called elytra, which protect the delicate hind wings and abdomen.
