-Tribe Acanthocinini

The Acanthocinini tribe, commonly known as flat-faced longhorn beetles, is part of the Cerambycidae family, known for their distinctively flattened faces and elongated antennae. Larvae are wood-borers, tunneling through dead or dying wood as they feed, while adults primarily consume plant material, such as leaves, bark, and occasionally nectar.

Diet

  • Larvae: Feed primarily on the wood and inner bark of dead, dying, or weakened trees and shrubs, especially hardwoods, although some species develop in conifers.

  • Adults: Feed on tree sap, bark, fungi, lichens, pollen, flowers, or tender bark, depending on the species. Many adults feed very little during their relatively short lives.

Range

  • The tribe Acanthocinini is distributed worldwide, with its greatest diversity in tropical and subtropical regions.

  • Numerous genera and species occur throughout Mexico, including the Pacific coast of Guerrero and the Zihuatanejo region.

  • Particularly diverse in tropical forests.

Habitat

  • Inhabits tropical dry forests, tropical rainforests, pine-oak forests, mangroves, woodland edges, secondary forests, and orchards.

  • Larvae develop inside dead branches, fallen logs, decaying trunks, and recently dead trees.

  • Adults are commonly found resting on tree trunks, branches, and logs, where their camouflage makes them difficult to detect.

Size

  • Adult length: 5–30 mm (0.2–1.2 in), depending on the genus and species.

  • Antennae are often as long as or longer than the body, especially in males.
