American Herring Gull

Larus smithsonianus

The American Herring Gull is a large gull with a gray and white adult plumage, black wingtips, yellow bill with a red spot, and pink legs. Juveniles are mottled brown and take four years to reach full adult coloration. These are common, opportunistic scavengers found across North America, known for their loud, competitive nature and varied diet. American Herring Gulls are highly opportunistic and are frequently seen near human activity like parking lots, fishing boats, and garbage dumps.
