Diet

• Adults: Feed primarily on flower nectar from low-growing plants.

• Caterpillars: Feed on grasses (Poaceae). Polypogon has been documented as a host genus, and more recent host-plant records also include Echinochloa, Paspalum and Zea.

• The species is closely associated with moist grass stands, making the availability of suitable grasses particularly important for breeding populations.

Range

• Ancyloxypha arene is a North and Central American grass skipper, ranging from southeastern Arizona, southern New Mexico and west-central Texas south through Mexico and Central America to Costa Rica.

• Around Zihua, Ancyloxypha arene would likely be considered occasional to locally uncommon, primarily because suitable damp grassy habitat is more localized than the surrounding tropical dry forest.

Habitat

• The Tropical Least Skipper is strongly associated with damp grassy areas, particularly along streams, ponds, marshes, drainage ditches and other wet or seasonally wet sites.

• Males patrol with a weak, low flight over grasses, often staying close to the ground rather than making the fast, high-flying movements typical of many larger skippers.

• Around Zihua, suitable habitat includes stream margins, wet-season grasslands, drainage channels, pond edges, marshy patches and moist vegetation along forest margins.

Size

• Ancyloxypha arene is a very small grass skipper, with a wingspan of approximately 19–27 mm.

• The wings are predominantly orange to tawny-orange, with a narrow black border along the outer margins of the upper wings.

• The underside of the hindwing is golden-orange, often with a distinctive pale ray extending from the wing base through the cell toward the outer margin.

• Its small size, subdued flight and habit of staying low among grasses can make it surprisingly easy to overlook.
