Subfamily Cyrestinae is a small subfamily of brush-footed butterflies (family Nymphalidae) that is represented in Mexico by the daggerwings, members of the genus Marpesia. These butterflies are easily recognized by their angular wings and the long, slender tail-like extensions on the hindwings that resemble daggers, giving the group its common name. Found primarily in tropical and subtropical forests, woodland edges, river corridors, and forest clearings, daggerwings are strong, fast fliers that often perch on leaves, tree trunks, or sunlit pathways.
