The genus Hamadryas is a group of medium- to large-sized butterflies within the family Nymphalidae. Commonly known as the cracker butterflies, species of Hamadryas are distributed from the southern United States through Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and much of South America. They are best known for their remarkable cryptic wing patterns, which closely resemble tree bark, lichens, or weathered wood when the butterflies rest with their wings spread flat against tree trunks. This camouflage makes them difficult to detect despite their relatively large size.A unique characteristic of many Hamadryas species is their ability to produce audible clicking or cracking sounds, especially males during territorial encounters and courtship.
