Coccoloba barbadensis is a tropical shrub or small tree in the buckwheat family (Polygonaceae), closely related to the well-known sea grape (Coccoloba uvifera). It is native to coastal regions of the Caribbean, Central America, and parts of Mexico, where it grows in dry forests, scrublands, and sandy or rocky coastal habitats. The plant produces slender, elongated flower spikes (racemes) bearing many small, greenish to whitish flowers. These develop into clusters of small, fleshy fruits that ripen from green to red, purple, or dark bluish tones. The fruits resemble tiny grapes and are edible, though usually more tart and less juicy than those of sea grape.
