The genus Prepona is a group of butterflies within the family Nymphalidae. Found from Mexico and Central America through much of tropical South America, They are renowned for their brilliant iridescent coloration, with many species displaying vivid bands or patches of metallic blue, turquoise, green, or violet on the upper surfaces of their wings, contrasted against brown or black backgrounds. In contrast, the undersides are cryptically patterned in shades of brown and grey, often resembling bark or dead leaves and providing excellent camouflage when the butterflies are at rest. Adults feed on fermenting fruit, tree sap, carrion, and other nutrient-rich organic matter rather than flower nectar.
