The genus Pyrrhogyra are a striking Neotropical butterflies belonging to the family Nymphalidae. It occurs from Mexico through Central America and into parts of northern and western South America, inhabiting tropical forests, forest edges, and secondary growth. The butterfly is readily recognized by its dark brown to black wings marked with a distinctive bright red to orange-red band or ring-like marking along the leading edge of the forewing, creating a bold contrast visible both in flight and at rest. Members of this genus, the are swift and agile fliers that spend much of their time in sunlit forest openings and along trails.
