Hairstreak Butterflies of Zihuatanejo

GENUS STREPHONOTA

Genus Strephonota is a genus of small to medium-sized hairstreak butterflies in the family Lycaenidae, occurring throughout the Neotropical region from Mexico and Central America to South America. Members of this genus are typically characterized by delicate tails on the hindwings, finely patterned undersides, and often subtle metallic scaling on the upper wing surfaces. Their wing undersides commonly display intricate combinations of lines, spots, and bands that provide excellent camouflage when resting among foliage or on tree bark. Like many hairstreaks, they possess eye-like markings near the hindwing tails that create a convincing "false head," helping to divert attacks from predators.
