Leafwing Butterflies of Zihuatanejo

GENUS ARCHAEOPREPONA

ARCHAEOPREPONA - SPECIES

The genus Archaeoprepona is a group of large, fast-flying Neotropical butterflies within the family Nymphalidae.  Archaeoprepona species are characterized by their powerful flight, robust bodies, and striking wing coloration, which often includes iridescent bands or patches of brilliant blue, turquoise, green, or violet set against dark brown or black backgrounds. In contrast, the undersides of the wings are cryptically patterned in shades of brown and grey, providing effective camouflage when the butterflies rest with their wings closed.
