Tigerwing Butterflies of Zihuatanejo

GENUS LYCOREA

The genus Lycorea is a small group of large, graceful butterflies within the family Nymphalidae and the subfamily Danainae, the same group that includes the monarchs and queens. These butterflies are characterized by their elongated wings and striking patterns of black, dark brown, orange, yellow, and translucent pale markings, giving them a delicate yet highly conspicuous appearance. Adults are slow, floating fliers that often visit flowers for nectar and participate in Müllerian mimicry complexes with other chemically protected butterflies.
