The genus Anartia is a group of colorful butterflies within the family Nymphalidae that occurs throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, from the southern United States through Central America, the Caribbean, and much of South America. Commonly known as the peacocks, species of Anartia are medium-sized butterflies recognized for their attractive wing patterns featuring combinations of orange, brown, black, white, blue, and pink markings, often accented by eye spots that help deter predators. They inhabit a variety of open and semi-open environments, including gardens, roadsides, wetlands, forest edges, and disturbed habitats, where they are frequently seen flying low over vegetation or basking in sunny areas.
