Subfamily Nymphalinae is a diverse and widespread subfamily of brush-footed butterflies within the family Nymphalidae, comprising many of the world's most familiar and colourful butterfly species. Members of Nymphalinae are generally medium-sized butterflies characterized by brightly patterned wings displaying combinations of orange, red, yellow, black, brown, and white. Like other nymphalids, they possess reduced forelegs that are not used for walking, giving the appearance of having only four functional legs.
