The genus Colobura is a small group of distinctive Neotropical butterflies within the family Nymphalidae, found from Mexico and Central America through much of South America. Members of this genus are best known for their striking black-and-white striped wing patterns, which resemble zebra markings and make them easily recognizable in flight. The most familiar species, the Colobura dirce, is widespread and commonly encountered in tropical forests, forest edges, gardens, and disturbed habitats. Adults are strong, active fliers that frequently visit fermenting fruit, tree sap, carrion, and animal droppings rather than flowers.
