Metalmark Butterflies of Zihuatanejo
GENUS HYPOPHYLLA
-
Genus Hypophylla
Genus Hypophylla is a small genus of Neotropical metalmark butterflies belonging to the family Riodinidae. These butterflies occur primarily in Mexico, Central America, and parts of South America, where they inhabit tropical and subtropical forests, forest edges, and seasonally dry woodlands. Members of Hypophylla are generally small to medium-sized butterflies characterized by intricate wing patterns that combine shades of brown, orange, black, and white, often accented by the fine metallic markings typical of many metalmarks. Their cryptic coloration helps them blend into bark, dead leaves, and shaded vegetation when at rest.
