The genus Anthanassa is a group of small to medium-sized butterflies within the family Nymphalidae, occurring primarily in the tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. Species of Anthanassa are closely related to the crescents and checkerspots and are characterized by intricate wing patterns featuring combinations of orange, brown, black, cream, and white markings. These butterflies are commonly found in open woodlands, forest edges, scrublands, gardens, and disturbed habitats, where they often bask in sunny areas and fly close to the ground. Adults feed mainly on flower nectar and occasionally visit mud puddles or decaying organic matter to obtain minerals.
