The genus Microtia is a small group of butterflies within the family Nymphalidae, belonging to the checkerspot tribe Melitaeini. Species of Microtia are found primarily in the southern United States, Mexico, and Central America, where they inhabit open woodlands, scrublands, grasslands, desert edges, and other sunny habitats. These butterflies are generally small and delicately patterned, displaying combinations of orange, yellow, black, brown, and cream markings arranged in the checkerboard-like pattern typical of many checkerspots. Adults are active daytime fliers that visit flowers for nectar and are often seen basking on bare ground or low vegetation.
