Spiderworts and Allies (Order Commelinales)
Order Commelinales is a small but diverse order of flowering plants (angiosperms) comprising approximately 1,200 species distributed mainly throughout tropical and subtropical regions, with some members extending into temperate areas. Members include terrestrial herbs, aquatic plants, and a few climbing species that commonly inhabit forests, wetlands, marshes, river margins, and disturbed habitats.
Members of Commelinales are characterized by soft, often succulent stems, parallel-veined leaves, and flowers with three petals that are frequently blue, purple, or violet.
