Class Liliopsida (commonly known as the monocotyledons or monocots) is a major group of flowering plants characterized by embryos containing a single seed leaf, or cotyledon. Monocots include familiar plants such as grasses, lilies, orchids, palms, irises, and bamboos. They are typically distinguished by parallel leaf venation, flower parts arranged in multiples of three, scattered vascular bundles within the stem, and fibrous root systems rather than a single taproot. Members of this class range from tiny aquatic species to large palms and bamboos, occupying habitats from tropical rainforests and grasslands to deserts and wetlands.
