Family Papaveraceae, commonly known as the poppy family, is a diverse family of flowering plants comprising about 800 species in more than 40 genera, distributed primarily throughout the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, with additional species occurring in subtropical and montane tropical areas. Members of this family include annual and perennial herbs, and occasionally shrubs, many of which produce a characteristic milky or brightly coloured latex. Papaveraceae species inhabit meadows, grasslands, woodlands, rocky slopes, disturbed ground, and cultivated gardens, where they provide abundant nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinating insects.
