The genus Vareuptychia is a small group of Neotropical butterflies within the family Nymphalidae. Species of Vareuptychia occur primarily in Mexico, Central America, and parts of tropical South America, where they inhabit forest understories, woodland edges, shaded trails, and other humid habitats. Like many satyrine butterflies, they are generally brown to grey-brown in coloration and possess subtle bands, lines, and eyespots on the wings that provide effective camouflage among dead leaves and forest litter.  Rather than feeding extensively on flowers, they commonly obtain nutrients from fermenting fruit, sap flows, moist soil, and decaying organic matter.
