It has erect, branching stems and alternate leaves that are broadly oval to heart-shaped, often with shallow lobes and toothed margins. The stems and leaves may be covered in soft or bristly hairs. Its small, five-petalled flowers are typically yellow to orange-yellow and grow in dense clusters surrounded by conspicuous leafy bracts. The flowers develop into small, segmented fruits containing seeds.
