Genus Calycopis is a large genus of hairstreak butterflies in the family Lycaenidae, occurring primarily in the Americas from the southern United States through Central America and into South America. These small butterflies are typically brown or gray above, while the undersides often display intricate patterns of lines, spots, and bands that aid in camouflage. Many species possess delicate tail-like extensions on the hindwings and contrasting markings that create a “false head,” helping to divert predator attacks away from vital body parts. One of the best-known species is the Red-banded Hairstreak, recognized by the bright red band crossing the underside of its wings.
