Bullhorn Acacia
Vachellia cornigera
Flowers by Colour
Vachellia cornigera, often called bullhorn acacias. These trees are common in tropical dry forests and coastal regions, particularly along the Pacific side. They are distinguished by their large, swollen, hollow thorns, which serve as nesting chambers for ants, most commonly species of Pseudomyrmex. The tree actively supports the ants by producing nectar and nutritious Beltian bodies on its leaves. In exchange, the ants act as fierce defenders—attacking herbivores, clearing nearby competing plants, and protecting the acacia from damage.
