Description

• Elytraria imbricata, commonly known as purple elytraria or hierba de toro, is a small perennial herb in the acanthus family (Acanthaceae). It typically grows as a low rosette of narrow, lance-shaped leaves, with prominent parallel veins and slightly toothed or wavy margins. Its small flowers are borne along upright, slender spikes surrounded by overlapping, scale-like bracts. The flowers are usually pale blue, violet, or whitish. The plant's compact growth habit allows it to persist close to the ground in warm climates.

Range

• Elytraria imbricata is native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, including Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and parts of South America. It is native to Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, and the surrounding area.

Habitat

• Purple elytraria grows in tropical dry forests, open woodland, scrub, and grassy areas, often in partly shaded sites beneath trees or shrubs. It can also occur along forest margins, trails, and disturbed ground. It is adapted to warm climates and may persist through seasonal dry periods, with growth and flowering influenced by rainfall and local moisture conditions.
