Description

• Celosia argentea, commonly known as silver cockscomb or plumed celosia, is an annual flowering plant in the amaranth family (Amaranthaceae). It has upright stems, simple leaves that are usually lance-shaped, and dense, feathery flower clusters that may be white, pink, red, purple, or yellow. Some cultivated forms produce compact, brightly coloured flower heads. The plant produces numerous small, shiny black seeds and is widely grown as an ornamental; its leaves are also eaten as a vegetable in some regions.

Range

• Celosia argentea is generally considered native to tropical Africa and parts of Asia, although its original range is uncertain. It has become widely cultivated and naturalized throughout tropical and subtropical regions, including Mexico. It grows in Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, and the surrounding area.

Habitat

• This adaptable plant grows in warm, sunny locations, including open fields, roadsides, gardens, agricultural land, and disturbed ground. It favours well-drained soil and tolerates heat and seasonal dry conditions. It commonly establishes in open areas where there is sufficient sunlight for flowering and seed production.
