The Scarlet Pea, scientifically known as Indigofera miniata, is a perennial plant belonging to the legume family (Fabaceae). A relatively small plant, often growing as a low shrub or ground cover. Found in open woodlands, grasslands, and along roadsides.

Description
• Indigofera miniata, commonly known as scarlet pea or western indigo, is a low-growing, spreading perennial herb in the legume family (Fabaceae). It has slender, often trailing stems and pinnately compound leaves with several small, oval leaflets. Its distinctive flowers are typically bright red to scarlet, sometimes with orange tones, and are arranged in short clusters. The flowers have the characteristic pea-like shape of legumes and develop into narrow pods containing several seeds. Like other indigo plants, it can form nitrogen-fixing root nodules.
Range
• Indigofera miniata is native to the southern United States, Mexico, Central America, and parts of the Caribbean. It is native to Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, and the surrounding area.
Habitat
• It grows in open, sunny habitats, including grasslands, dry scrub, sandy or rocky ground, roadsides, and disturbed areas. Its low, spreading growth habit allows it to grow among grasses and other low vegetation, particularly in warm climates with seasonally dry conditions.
