Description
• Centrosema pubescens, commonly known as butterfly pea or centro, is a perennial climbing or trailing vine in the legume family (Fabaceae). Its stems and leaves are hairy, and its leaves are divided into three oval leaflets. The showy, pea-shaped flowers are typically violet to purple, often with paler markings. The plant produces elongated, flattened seed pods that split open when mature.
Range
• Centrosema pubescens is native to tropical America, including parts of Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and South America. It has been introduced widely in other tropical regions for forage and ground cover. It is native to Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, and the surrounding area.
Habitat
• This vine grows in tropical grasslands, open woodland, forest edges, scrub, and disturbed areas. It favours warm climates and can grow in sunny or partly shaded locations, spreading over the ground or climbing through surrounding vegetation.
