Cleome spinosa, called the spiny spiderflower, is a species of flowering plant in the genus Cleome.

Description

• Cleome spinosa, commonly known as spiny spider flower, is an annual or short-lived perennial flowering plant in the cleome family (Cleomaceae). The name has historically been applied to plants now generally classified as Tarenaya spinosa. It has upright, branching stems, palmately divided leaves, and clusters of showy flowers with long, projecting stamens. The flowers are typically pink, purple, or white, and the stems and leaf stalks may bear small prickles.

Range

• The taxonomic name Cleome spinosa has been used for plants native to tropical America, particularly parts of South America. Related plants under this name have been widely cultivated as ornamentals and may grow beyond their original range. It is cultivated in Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, and the surrounding area.

Habitat

• It grows in sunny, warm environments, including gardens, roadsides, vacant lots, open fields, and other disturbed areas. It generally favours well-drained soil and can tolerate heat and periods of relatively dry weather.
