Calliandra houstoniana is a fast growing small tree or large shrub with fine feathery foliage and bright red fine structured powderpuff flowers. The native range of this species is Mexico to Central America. t is used for shade in coffee plantations and in agroforestry systems, as livestock feed, green manure and a source of firewood. The bark is considered medicinal.
Description
• Calliandra houstoniana, commonly known as powderpuff or Houston's calliandra, is a flowering shrub or small tree in the legume family (Fabaceae). It has finely divided, fern-like compound leaves and distinctive rounded flower heads with numerous long, projecting stamens, often pink to red with pale tips. Its flowers give the plant a soft, powder-puff appearance. The fruits are flattened pods that split open when mature, releasing the seeds.
