Tribe Pyrrhopygini is a distinctive group of skipper butterflies (family Hesperiidae) commonly known as the firetips, represented in Mexico primarily within tropical and subtropical forests of the south and along both coastal regions. These butterflies are generally medium to large for skippers and are easily recognized by their robust bodies, rapid flight, and the brightly coloured red, orange, yellow, or white tips of the abdomen that give them their common name. Many species have dark brown or black wings that contrast sharply with vivid metallic blue, green, white, or orange markings. Firetips are strong, fast fliers that often patrol forest edges, clearings, and sunlit trails, while adults visit flowers for nectar and occasionally feed at damp ground.
