Panicum is a grass, in the subfamily Panicoideae.

Description

• Panicum is a genus of grasses in the family Poaceae, comprising annual and perennial species that range from low-growing herbs to tall, robust grasses. Members typically have narrow leaves with parallel veins and branched flower heads bearing numerous small spikelets. The spikelets produce seeds that serve as food for birds and other wildlife. Several species are important forage grasses, while others grow as weeds in agricultural fields or disturbed habitats. Some species, such as Panicum miliaceum, are cultivated as grain crops.

Range

• The genus Panicum has a broad distribution across tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions worldwide, with many species native to the Americas and others native to Africa, Asia, and other regions. Several species occur naturally in Mexico. Panicum is represented in Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, and the surrounding area.

Habitat

• Species of Panicum occupy diverse habitats, including grasslands, savannas, tropical dry forests, wetlands, roadsides, pastures, and disturbed ground. Some species favour moist soils or seasonally flooded sites, while others tolerate heat, drought, and nutrient-poor soils. Many grow best in open, sunny locations and respond rapidly to seasonal rainfall, providing forage and seed resources for wildlife.
