Smooth Witchgrass, also commonly known as fall panicum, is a summer annual grass native to North America that can reach heights of up to six feet. It is characterized by its waxy, largely hairless stems that often bend in a zigzag pattern. This resilient grass thrives in moist to wet habitats, including disturbed areas, floodplains, and cultivated fields, and is known for producing a prolific number of small, oval, straw-coloured seeds.
Description
• Panicum dichotomiflorum, commonly known as Smooth Witchgrass, is an annual grass in the family Poaceae. It has branching stems that may grow upright or spread outward, long, flat leaf blades, and open, branching flower heads bearing numerous small spikelets. The flower heads can appear loose and airy, with green spikelets that may develop purplish tones as they mature. This fast-growing grass produces abundant seeds and can become a weed in agricultural fields and disturbed areas.
Range
• Panicum dichotomiflorum is native to North America, including parts of Mexico and the United States, and has been introduced to other regions worldwide. It is established in Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, and the surrounding area.
Habitat
• This species commonly grows in moist, sunny habitats, including wetlands, drainage ditches, pond margins, irrigated fields, roadsides, and disturbed ground. It favours damp or seasonally wet soils and often grows vigorously during warm, rainy periods. It can also establish in cultivated fields and other disturbed sites where moisture and sunlight are available.
