Order Arecales is a distinctive order of flowering plants (angiosperms) represented primarily by the family Arecaceae, which contains more than 2,600 species distributed mainly throughout tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Members of this order range from small understory palms to towering canopy trees and are characterized by unbranched trunks, a crown of large evergreen leaves, and flowers produced in branching clusters enclosed by protective bracts. Palms are dominant components of many tropical rainforests, coastal habitats, savannas, wetlands, and desert oases, where they provide food, shelter, and nesting sites for a wide variety of animals.
