Diet

• Adults feed on nectar from a variety of flowering plants..

• Eggs are laid in groups on the host plant, and young caterpillars initially feed together.

Range

• Theona Checkerspot has a broad distribution extending from Mexico through Central America to Colombia, with the range continuing north into the southwestern United States.

• In the Zihua area, it is an occasional butterfly, particularly in open or lightly wooded areas with suitable flowering plants and larval hosts.

Habitat

• It occupies a diverse range of relatively open habitats, including tropical scrub, thorn woodland, forest edges, grassland, canyons, open woodland, and disturbed clearings.

• It tends to favour sunny locations rather than dense forest.

• In the northern part of its range it can occur in relatively dry landscapes, while farther south it occupies warmer subtropical and tropical environments.

Description

• A medium-sized checkerspot with a wingspan of approximately 32–44 mm.

• The upper surface is predominantly dark brown to black, crossed by bands and patches of orange, yellow-orange, and cream.

• A broad yellow-orange post-median band crosses the wings, with additional orange markings toward the outer margins. The dark veins and borders give the pattern a strongly checkered appearance.

• The underside of the hindwing is especially distinctive, with alternating orange and cream bands divided by dark veins, producing a series of neatly arranged rectangular or oblong patches.
