Checkerspot Butterflies of Zihuatanejo

TRIBE MELITAEINI

Tribe Melitaeini is a diverse group of brush-footed butterflies (family Nymphalidae) that is well represented in Mexico, where its members occur in habitats ranging from deserts and grasslands to mountain meadows, pine-oak forests, and tropical highlands. Commonly known as checkerspots, crescents, and patch butterflies, these butterflies are typically small to medium-sized and are recognized by their intricate checkerboard patterns of orange, black, brown, cream, and white. Adults are active flower visitors and are often seen basking in sunny open areas.
