The genus Chlosyne is a diverse group of medium-sized butterflies within the family Nymphalidae, commonly known as the checkerspots. Species of Chlosyne are distributed throughout North, Central, and South America, with many occurring in open habitats such as grasslands, meadows, deserts, forest edges, and scrublands. These butterflies are recognized by their intricate wing patterns, which typically consist of checkerboard-like arrangements of orange, yellow, white, black, and brown markings. The undersides of the wings are often equally colourful and patterned, providing both camouflage and species recognition.
