Bread nut (Brosimum alicastrum), also known as ramón or Maya nut, is a large, evergreen tree in the fig family (Moraceae), native to tropical regions of Mexico, Central America, and parts of the Caribbean. The tree has simple, glossy green leaves and a straight, sturdy trunk with smooth greyish bark. Its fruits are small, round, and green to yellow-orange when ripe, containing a single large seed. These seeds—commonly referred to as bread nuts—are highly nutritious and have been an important traditional food source for centuries. When roasted or boiled, they develop a flavour often compared to potatoes, chestnuts, or bread, which gives the plant its common name.
Description
• Brosimum alicastrum, commonly known as ramón, breadnut, or Maya nut, is a large evergreen tree in the mulberry family (Moraceae). It has a broad crown, a straight trunk, and leathery, oval to elliptic leaves with smooth margins. The tree produces small, inconspicuous flowers and rounded fruits that turn yellowish or orange when ripe. Its seeds are edible when cooked or roasted and have long been used as a food source in Mesoamerica.
