Cocos nucifera, commonly called coconut or coconut palm. It is a tree with a slim and smooth trunk, a crown of leaves, and rounded, green or yellow fruit. Its flowers grow in clusters on a stem; a flowering structure known as an inflorescence. The female flowers are larger than the male flowers, and both are found on the same inflorescence.
Description
• Cocos nucifera, commonly known as the coconut palm, is a tall, unbranched palm in the family Arecaceae. It has a slender, ringed trunk topped by a crown of long, arching, feather-like leaves. Small male and female flowers grow together in branched clusters, which develop into large, fibrous fruits containing a hard shell, edible white flesh, and coconut water. The fruits can float and remain viable after long periods at sea, helping the species spread across tropical coastlines.
Range
• The original native range of Cocos nucifera is uncertain because people have transported and cultivated it throughout the tropics for thousands of years. It is now widespread across tropical coastal regions worldwide, including Mexico and much of Central America. It is cultivated and established in Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, and the surrounding area.
Habitat
• The coconut palm is characteristic of tropical coastal environments, including beaches, sandy shorelines, coastal plains, and cultivated landscapes. It thrives in warm, frost-free conditions with abundant sunlight and tolerates salty air and sandy soils. Although it grows best with regular moisture, established palms can withstand seasonal dry periods.
