Hairstreak Butterflies of Zihuatanejo
GENUS OSTRINOTES
-
Genus Ostrinotes
Genus Ostrinotes is a small genus of hairstreak butterflies in the family Lycaenidae, distributed throughout the Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean south into Central and South America. These butterflies are generally small and inconspicuous, with gray, brown, or bluish upper wings and finely patterned undersides marked by delicate lines, spots, and subtle bands. Like many hairstreaks, Ostrinotes species possess one or more slender tails on the hindwings and eye-like markings near the wing margins that create a convincing "false head," helping to deflect attacks from predators such as birds and lizards.
