Hairstreak Butterflies of Zihuatanejo
GENUS ELECTROSTRYMON
-
Genus Electrostrymon
Genus Electrostrymon is a genus of small hairstreak butterflies belonging to the family Lycaenidae. Species of this genus are found mainly in the Americas, ranging from the southern United States and Mexico through Central America, the Caribbean, and into South America. Like many hairstreaks, Electrostrymon butterflies are characterized by delicate tails on the hindwings, intricate patterns of lines and spots on the wing undersides, and a "false head" formed by tails and eye-like markings that helps confuse predators. The upper wing surfaces are often brown, grey, or bluish, while the undersides display finely detailed patterns useful for camouflage.
