The genus Consul is a small group of Neotropical butterflies within the family Nymphalidae and the subfamily Charaxinae. These butterflies occur from Mexico and Central America through much of tropical South America and are most commonly associated with forests and forest edges. Consul species are renowned for their remarkable leaf mimicry. When at rest with their wings closed, the undersides closely resemble dead leaves, complete with vein-like markings, mottled brown coloration, and shapes that imitate curled or damaged foliage, providing excellent camouflage against predators. In contrast, the upper wing surfaces often display rich shades of orange, reddish-brown, black, and cream, creating a striking appearance in flight.
